Can I make beef jerky in my Sunkeep Solar Food Dehydrator (SFD)?

Yes. The USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline’s current recommendation for making jerky safely is to heat meat to 160 °F and poultry to 165 °F before the dehydrating process. After heating to 160 °F or 165 °F, check to be sure your Sunkeep SFD is maintaining a constant temperature of 130 to 140 °F on the shelf you are using during the drying process. We recommend putting the meat inside the Sunkeep SFD in the morning to be sure you will have the 4 – 6 hours necessary to finish the process.

Or follow the receipe for Hot Pickle Cure Jerky in the recipes section.

If my food is not completely dehydrated at the end of the day can I leave it in my Sunkeep SFD overnight?

Leaving partly dehydrated fruit in the Sunkeep SFD overnight should be alright if the night will be cool. It is not recommended to leave meat or vegetables in the Sunkeep SFD overnight as they are more prone to bacteria growth.

How long will it take my food to dry?

The length of time will depend on the type of food and how it is prepared. Generally drying using your Sunkeep SFD will take about as long as an electric dehydrator would take. Most foods can be dehydrated in one full day.
